The Houston Astros sign stealing scandal leaves deep, emotional scars
By Johnny Hart
You’ve seen the new Netflix documentary series on Aaron Hernandez, right? The one about the once-adored now-despised New England Patriots star-turned-convicted murderer.
If not, take a few hours and check it out.
Among the many striking and shocking elements, at least through the early days of this real-life soap opera, is the seemingly undeterred support from Patriots fans for one of Tom Brady’s top targets.

The case for treating Antonio Brown with compassion, empathy
By Johnny Hart
I’m worried for Antonio Brown.
The now-former Buccaneers wide receiver is not someone who a lot of people find easy to root for, especially after his spectacle Sunday in Tampa Bay’s win over the New York Jets.
Brown is “no longer a Buc,” said Tampa Bay head coach Bruce Arians, after a mid-game incident in which he reportedly refused to go into play, took off his shoulder pads and undershirt and walked off the field.

Les Shapiro had unyielding conviction … and a solid appetite
By Johnny Hart
Those in Les Shapiro’s substantial Facebook inner circle knew today was eminent. The family of the longtime Denver sports icon and broadcaster posted on Tuesday that Shapiro had entered hospice after a lengthy battle with cancer.
And not that any cancer is fair, but in the case of Shapiro’s lung cancer, it seemed particularly unfair.
“I’ve never smoked, I don’t drink, and I work out six days a week. If you had asked me to name the top 1,000 possible ways I would die, lung cancer would not have been on that list,” Shapiro, then 62, told Westword in Dec. 2018. “I happen to have a type of lung cancer that 98 percent of people with it are non-smokers.”

National Baseball Hall of Fame fails to live up to its own mission
This might count as sacrilegious in Broncos Country, but the truth is, deep down in my heart of hearts, I believe baseball is the greatest of all sports.
Don’t get me wrong. Football sits comfortably on the throne of the sporting world. But for my money, its baseball.
Baseball is uniquely human. And uniquely American.

Let’s give the Pat Bowlen era the Hollywood ending it deserves
This … is going to sound a little nutty. And will it ever be meaningfully considered? No, probably not.
But, if you come at it with an open mind, Broncos Country, this might not sound so crazy.
(And, to be honest, it might make a pretty uplifting sports comedy.)
